Synopsis

Flora Sandes was never supposed to become a soldier.

An Englishwoman in her late thirties, she went to Serbia in 1914 expecting to help the wounded. Instead, war stripped away every certainty she carried with her. Hospitals overflowed. Armies collapsed. Disease nearly killed her. Then, as Serbia retreated toward Albania, Flora made the choice that would define the rest of her life:
